Description: This series reaches Spohr's finest and most performed symphony, his first truly Romantic work, and his unique, at the time it was premiered, misunderstood Sixth. The representations of Handel/Bach, Hadyn/Mozart and Beethoven, culminating in "music of today" in which he added trombones and percussion to his steadily increasing instrumentation to look obliquely (satirically?) at the massive orchestral effects of French opera and ballet, confused his audience. First recording of the overture to the 1840 oratorio which followed Des Heilands letzte Stunden (you know, the one from last month which keeps refusing to arrive from Germany). Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana; Howard Shelley.
