Description: Haydn's unusual mass (1777), in which he uses a wind orchestra for the tuttis, has been recorded before but the 40-minute Albrechtsberger work, written in 1802 for Prince Nicolaus Esterházy and conducted by Joseph Haydn at its premiere, is a real find - a glorious example of the high Classical mass with rich orchestration but not stinting on the polyphonic mastery which made this composer such a valued teacher. Florian Schmitt-Bohn (soprano), Joachim Köble, Roman Broszeit (altos), Christian Eisner (tenor), Ulrich Rausch (bass), Members of the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra; Raimund Hug, Freiburg Baroque Soloists; Günter Theis (M. Haydn). Original 1990 release.
