Description: Weinberg wrote his three sets (totalling 23 pieces) of Notebooks in 1944/45, which likely explains their consistent serious, somber, sometimes outright frightening and lububrious character. The echoes of Jewish music probably recall the millions of murdered Jewish children in music which is far away from Schumann's established genre of Kinderszenen, demanding a high level of competence from the pianist. Shostakovich's early (1927) Aphorisms share the rest of the space with the Sketches by the pianist's wife which were largely insipired by a 2004 trip to Israel and which make use of several types of Jewish folk and sacred music. Jascha Nemtsov (piano).
