ALAN HOVHANESS (1911-2000): Symphony No. 10 "Vahaken", Meditation on Zeami, Floating World, Ode to the Temple of Sound.

Description: The symphony began life in 1945, its subtitle coming from the Armenian wind god Vahagn, but exists in a revised form from around 1961, its revision impetus coming from Hovhaness's current interest in Indian classical music, whose influences color it throughout. The other three works, dating from 1963-66 and premiered by Barbirolli, Kostelanetz and Stokowski, are all Japanese-inspired with Ode having some particularly ravishing segments of free, rhythmless percussion woven in amongst its pentatonic melodies, while Meditation is more expansive and exploratory, its string clusters suggesting some of the modernist experiments going on at the time in Europe. Frost Symphony Orchestra; Chung Park.
