LUÍS DE FREITAS BRANCO (1890-1955): Orchestral Works, Vol. 2 - Symphony No. 2, Artificial Paradises, After a Reading of Guerra Junqueiro (Fantasy).
Catalogue Number: 02K004
Description: The next volume in this series brings a 44-minute symphony from 1927 with influences ranging from Gregorian chant to Franck, Debussy and Bruckner (the latter very obvious in the long scherzo), a Richard Straussian tone-poem of 1909 (Guerra Junqueiro) and what is considered the composer's masterpiece, a 1910 tone-poem of 14 minutes based on De Quincey's "Confessions of an Opium Eater" whose radical harmonies and use of polytonality introduced "modern" music to Portugal for the first time. RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra; Àlvaro Cassuto.
