Description: A jazz composer and performer who came to classical music later in his career, Cale produces, in his 1989 cello concerto a work whose classical sections have an ecstatic, otherworldly glow and intensity to them and which are punctuated by jazz improv-sounding interludes. The violin concerto is of quite similar mood, the meandering, searching, seemingly always rising solo line now and then suggesting the expressionism/impressionism of Szymanowski. Written for a student orchestra, the suite describes five geographical sites in Australia in an attractive, dramatic manner not far off from soundtrack style.
