FREDRIK PACIUS (1809-1891): The Hunt of King Charles.
Catalogue Number: 02I041
Label: Marco Polo
Description: Although composed to a Swedish libretto, this 1852 work has become recognized as the first Finnish opera (it's performed here in a commonly-used Finnish translation). You may remember Pacius from his late German-language opera Die Loreley (1887) which came out on BIS in 2004; this is more conservative and is closely modeled on Weber's Freischütz and Oberon with only the slightest hints of Finnish folk music. Still, a pleasurable romantic operatic experience no matter what the nationalistic stakes. 2 CDs. Finnish libretto available on-line. Kai Pitkänen (tenor), Niina Ahola (soprano), Heikki Orama (bass), Pori Opera Choir, Pori Sinfonietta; Ari Rasilainen.
