LEO ORNSTEIN (1892-2002): Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2, 6 Preludes for Cello and Piano, Composition 1 for Cello and Piano, 2 Pieces for Cello and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 02I013
Label: New World
Description: Although the first cello sonata dates from the height of Ornstein's most fervently avant-garde, "futurist" period, it does not belong to that part of his œuvre. Tonal although spiced with some dissonances, it is in the traditional four movements and the first movement is even in sonata form and plainly Russian and Eastern European Jewish elements appear in the final three movements. Ditto for the second sonata, a one-movement piece from around 1920 (Composition 1 may have been a slow movement meant for this sonata) while the 1929-30 Preludes arguably could make up another sonata in which jazz also makes an appearance alongside angular music of Bartókian or Prokofievian type. Joshua Gordon (cello), Randall Hodgkinson (piano).
