Description: Second recording of the third symphony (1936-39, rev. 1946) which is full of the brash American sounds you would expect from this source. The 1948 Sixth (in its third recording) is an even more viscerally exciting work with its influences of Shostakovich and Prokofiev assimilated into the composer's mature style. The Hot-Time Dance of the same year sounds a lot more Romanian than American while Archipelago is a no-holds-barred 1935 rumba which could have been written by Milhaud. BBC Philharmonic; John Storgårds.
