Description: Anyone out there have the old NKF LP of Cleve’s fourth piano concerto? Until now, that was almost all there was of this Norwegian composer’s music on record. Now we get two full-scale chamber works, a seven-minute Romance and three arrangements of original piano pieces. The piano quintet (1905-06) also exists as “Concerto No. 3 for Piano and String Orchestra” and is a 28-minute work in four movements whose main stylistic influences are Schumann and Grieg. But with the three-movement, 23-minute sonata of 1918-19, commissioned and premiered by Johan Halvorsen, lays its nationalist cards on the table with its use of a Norwegian folk-like tune in its first movement and continues its Nordic feeling throughout its fresh and vernal outer movements and gently melancholic scherzo. Fragaria Vesca, Tor Johan Bøen (violin), Sanae Yoshida (piano).
