Description: This libretto, by Emanuel Geibel, was originally intended for Mendelssohn who finished only three numbers before his death. The young Bruch took it up in 1860 and its successful premiere three years later did much for his career. Stylistically in a line from Weber and Spohr, it features a big dramatic scene where the title character makes her pact with the spirits of the Rhine (obviously inspired by the Wolf’s Glen scene in Der Freischütz). Conservative as he would remain always, Bruch’s colorful orchestration and attractive melodies make this a must-have for lovers of German Romantic opera. 3 CDs for the price of 2. German-English libretto. Michaela Kaune, Magdalena Hinterdobler (sopranos), Thomas Mohr (tenor), Benedikt Eder (baritone), Prague Philharmonic Choir, Munich Radio Orchestra; Stefan Blunier.
