Description: Unlike the last couple of releases of this composer’s music, this one doesn’t consist of folk-music harmonizations. Here we have conservative romantic chamber music in the Brahmsian tradition (especially the 1913 sonata and the first movement of the piano quartet which was written in the late 1940s while Monrad Johansen was serving a prison term for treason after World War II ). Standing exotically alone is the 16-minute suite of incidental music (1925) for a play by a Norwegian woman about Hiawatha (which was never produced). This turns out to be strongly influence by music scores the playwright had in hand by one of the “American Indianists”, Carlos Troyer. Fragaria Vesca.
