Description: The first two of this writer, statesman and amateur composer’s four violin concertos, his only known compositions, appeared almost four years ago (05N029). Like those, these are practically opera scenarios such are their cantabile tunefulness and memorable melody; these date from 1800 and 1801 and the soloist provides his own separate note on their prefiguring of Schubertian Romanticism. The 16-minute symphony by Gossec is from 1762 yet fits right in with mature Classicism and demonstrates why we should really hear more of his 62 works in the genre. Kolja Lessing (violin), Munich Radio Orchestra; Ulf Schirmer, Sebastian Weigle (Gossec).
