Description: Athough the notes are parsimonious with dates and the whole booklet is poorly edited (all the songs are there but not in the order in which they are presented on the discs while one of the two Nachtlieds sung has a different Nachtlied as text), it appears that all of the songs without opus number are youthful, dating from 1877-79 and with Eichendorff and Geibel receiving the majority of settings. Several are instantly memorable; most are valuable practice for the teenage composer. There are also 19 minutes of excerpts from an opera you're not likely to ever see recorded complete (the 1897 Theuerdank) and 20 minutes of unrecorded piano music (in fact, much of the stuff here was not only unrecorded but had never been performed until now!). 2 CDs.
