Description: It turns out that the December 2009 release (12L004) of this Dutch composer's symphonic poems was only a first volume (it didn't say so at the time), meaning that we get to enjoy another 55 minutes of attractive late Romantic music. Only one of them is actually a symphonic poem though - the 12-minute Elverhöi (1940) which is the only piece here to offer pastels in portions of its orchestral color scheme. Everything else is painted in bright primary colors (even Le Cid is a "comedy overture") and Frühlingsgewalt (a concert overture from 1894) and the 1917 Sinfonietta are bursting with energy and high spirits (the latter has a slow movement which Mahler might have written had he been a composer of "light music" and a scherzo that Dvorák wouldn't have been ashamed of [I had to encore it right away]). Northwest German Philharmonic; Antony Hermus.
