Description: Sokolowski's Venice Suite consists of whimsical impressions of the city, evoking its traditional crafts and art, its bustling squares, carnival and the play of light on the canals. Imaginatively scored, with each musician playing several instruments, with additional sonorities emphasizing the sounds of bells and tinkling glass, the work is firmly grounded in tonality and dancing rhythms, with scene-setting sonic effects. The Ewazen is more conventionally tonal, like the bold and satisfying works for winds for which he is well known. In three movements cast in classical forms, the piece is warmly and colorfully romantic, expressive and sonorously scored. Trio Con Brio.
