Description: Ticheli's symphony depicts a kind of spiritual journey, beginning in hope and passing through episodes of introspection and doubt (a deliciously malicious scherzo diabolico) before arriving at a final resolution. Cast in a tonal vocabulary and four-movement symphonic form, the work charts a bold, dramatic arc. Gilbertson's Vigil derives some inspiration from the Russian Orthodox Vespers, which spirit informs the shadowy opening section. This soon gives way to a powerfully driven, warlike climax, however, before subsiding into reflective tranquility and solemn ritual once again.
