Description: Brian felt that "the best of (him)" was in his operas and, even though there are no symphonies here, the 13:37 Preludio tragico from his 1952 Beatrice Cenci, coeval with his Ninth and Tenth Symphonies, outdoes them in range of orchestral invention. 39 of the 71 minutes here are from Turandot (1949-51), whose first act is more adventurous and chromatic and the last two more diatonic and classically-oriented; all but the 12-minute Variations from The Tigers are world premiere recordings. Malcolm MacDonald's 15 pages of fine-print notes may take longer to read than to hear the music but are packed full of invaluable information. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; Garry Walker.
