Description: A violinist by profession, this Dutch composer began writing at 4! The symphony of 2005 is a wild combination of jazz, rock and standard 20th century classical styles whose movement headings tell you all you need to know: Maniacal, Lawless and Elegiac. Accessing similar popular sourcing from the Caribbean and Mexico, the two-piano concerto (2003) takes five Mexican and Cuban folk-songs and dances as its (utterly tonal and high spirited) material while the violin concerto (commissioned by Esa-Pekka Salonen for the L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group in 2002) is stylistically more "modern" in its layering of disparate sounds of top of each other to create a complex, sometimes non-tonal, tapestry of sound through which, at times, an accordion sends out rhythmic and tonal fragments.
