Description: A composer with a broad background in the techniques of contemporary music - he has carried out research in electroacoustic methods, studied piano improvisation, and studied with Nono - Traversa writes pieces in which an appealingly lively energy is accompanied by a sense of post-Webernian economy and concision of gesture. The second quartet, in four brief movements, is a good example; atonal, the outer movements and a scherzo-like second vigorous but restrained; the slow movement a succession of whispered chords. The pieces for solo instruments are playgrounds for the expected extended instrumental techniques, further extended in two cases by spatialized electronic enhancements. Evocative titles suggest shadows of a program or descriptive intent to lend form to the complex abstractions of several of these precisely etched miniature tableaux. SACD hybrid
