Label: Dal Segno
Description: Gurney's pieces have only one other recording (the last three listed above are only available here): the Nocturnes are Klavierstücke in the style of Schumann (probably entrance pieces for the RCM around 1908-09) while his later preludes (1919-20) are not at all "songs without words" as one might expect from a song composer but more like an English Fauré in the making. Howell's three pieces last 20 minutes and are bleaker and more austere than the chamber music he was writing around the same time (just after the Great War); he later orchestrated the third, Procession. Alan Gravill (piano), Jeremy Filsell (piano - Howells). Original 1990 Gamut release; original 1994 Guild release (Howells).
