Description: Rubinstein wrote more piano trios than any other chamber music and these works date from his early years (the op. 15 pair, one of almost Mendelssohnian lightness, the other minor-key melancholy and passion, date from 1851) to his high maturity (the Fifth is from 1883 and is his most thematically rich and adventurous). There is even Russian folk-like music in the 1870 Fourth - a rare appearance in all of Rubinstein's European-centered music. The piano part is written for himself and so makes plenty of demands on technique but the string parts are idiomatic as well and many memorable themes will stick with you after hearing this well-filled (158 min.) pair of discs. 2 CDs. Edlian Piano Trio.
