JESÚS RUEDA (b.1961): Symphony No. 3 "Luz", Viaje immaginario "Francisco Guerrero in memoriam".
Catalogue Number: 01M012
Description: Rueda's 'Light' symphony is a grand, dazzling large-scale five-movement work, appropriately full of color and energy. Four movements related to the four elements - Fire, a dynamic perpetuum mobile, reminiscent of John Adams; Water, a series of transformations of a persistent motif; Earth, breathlessly changing like time-lapse photography of natural processes, and the ethereal, texturally clear Air - are followed by the finale Towards the Light, evoking vast spaces and impossibly distant times and places. Throughout, the music is basically tonal, with much inventive orchestral color. 'Imaginary Journey', in memory of the composer's teacher Francisco Guerrero, is a dark piece, with a heavy funereal tread, and evokes the strange textures and timbres of electronic music through extremes of instrumental registers and combinations of sounds. Asturias Symphony Orchestra; Maximiano Valdés.
