Description: Patterson's music is more conservative than David Matthews, really going in for lyrical, expressive melodies and much of the music in these three concertos from 1992, 2009 and 2002 (respectively as listed above) has a warmth and beauty which no lover of tonal contemporary music could fail to appreciate. At the same time, this is not syrupy, emotional neo-Romantic tripe; the emotion is contained, there is unease as well as joy and, having specialized in writing for string instruments throughout his career, the solo parts are unfailingly attractive for performers as well as listeners. Tamás András (violin), Alice Neary (cello), Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola), Orchestra Nova; George Vass.
