Description: This disc traverses almost the entirety of Hoddinott's career, from the charming neoclassical concerto of 1949 to the late song cycle Promontory from 2003. The Op.3 is thoroughly tonal, with lively outer movements and a pastoral slow movement. By the 1960s, when the Concerto Grosso was written, Hoddinott's mature style had emerged - darker and more dissonant, with a sinewy intensity that remained a trademark of his style for the rest of his life. The harmonic language - broadly that of Bartók and Shostakovich - remained tonal, however. Both song cycles are marvelously atmospheric, celebrating the brooding, unspoilt wild coastline of the composer's native Wales, home to some of the most impressive natural beauty in the British Isles. These works are fine examples of Hoddinott's melodic gifts accompanied by his characteristic pungent, insistently memorable harmony; e motionally generous and ultimately slightly melancholy in mood. Welsh-English and English texts. Jeremy Huw Williams (baritone), Robert Plane (clarinet), Liam Duffy (horn), Welsh Chamber Orchestra; Anthony Hose.
