NED ROREM (b.1923): Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, After Reading Shakespeare for Solo Cello.
Catalogue Number: 01I012
Description: Needless to say, collectors of American orchestral music and concertos will not be buying this disc for the 22-minute solo cello piece but both works are characterized by Rorem's traditional employment of tonality, often a singing, vocal style for the soloists, and, in the 1998 concerto, a crisp, clear orchestral fabric of Gallic clarity (only eight winds, four brass and strings). Each in in multiple-movement format, the concerto in eight sections with titles suggesting the story of Adam and Eve (the work was written for the soloists here, collaborators and friends of the composer for more than 25 years) while the solo suite's origins are obvious in its title. Jaime Laredo (violin), Sharon Robinson (cello), IRIS Orchestra; Michael Stern.
