WALTER BRAUNFELS (1882-1954): Scottish Fantasy for Viola and Orchestra, Op. 47, Carnival Overture*, Op. 22, Prelude and Fugue, Op. 36*, 2 Hölderlin Songs for Baritone and Orchestra, Op. 27. * - First Recordings.

Description: The bright and breezy Carnival Overture’s eight-and-a-half minutes are woven from music for Braunfels’ 1906-08 opera Princess Brambilla while the 16-minute Prelude and Fugue (1922-25) has a freshness and non-Germanic lightness while also being a “Concerto for Orchestra” in all but name. Having been premiered on Dutton Epoch back in early 2014, the Scottish Fantasy gets a second recording and the sound of 1930s Universal horror film music didn’t strike me then as it did this time in a slightly faster rendering! German texts. Barbara Buntrock (viola), Paul-Armin Edelmann (baritone), Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz; Gregor Bühl.
