Description: Unlike the many recordings of baroque and early classical sacred music from Mexico, Peru and Bolivia which have come out recently, this batch is from Brazil. And, remember, it’s warm in Brazil for Christmas! So Nunes Garcia’s Christmas mass is sunny and vernal, floating on a bed of pairs of violas, cellos, clarinets, bassoons, trumpets, horns with timpani and organ. The Gloria is even rather startlingly manic. This isn’t quite like any sacred music of the period (1811) you’ve heard before. The Silva Gomes mass of 1785 is less opulently scored and its trumpets give it a Baroque brilliance. Each mass is around 30 minutes and the 17 minutes of short sacred pieces run from the late 17th century to the end of the 18th. Latin, Portuguese-English texts. Ex Cathedra; Jeffrey Skidmore.
