Catalogue Number: 11U049
Reference: SU 4233-2
Description: Martinů composed this 39-minute “opera-pastoral”, based on Tolstoy’s short story “Where Love Is, God Is”, to his own English-language libretto in America at the turn of 1951–52 for a New York television broadcast. Comparing it to his earlier short operas based on miracle-plays The Miracle of Our Lady and The Legend of St. Dorothy (from the ballet Špalíček), the composer warned that, though the texts may seem “serious and ‘grave’”, it should be performed “joyously” (“For me, it is a blithe work...”). Libretto included. Lucie Silkenová (soprano), Jaroslav Březina (tenor), Ivan Kusnjer (baritone), Petr Svoboda (bass), Martinů Voices, Czech Philharmonic; Jiří Bělohlávek.
