CHARLES HUBERT PARRY (1848-1918): Symphony No. 4 in E Minor (original version), Proserpine - A Short Ballet, 3 movements from Suite moderne (all World Premiere Recordings).
Catalogue Number: 11U003
Reference: CHAN 10994
Description: The 1889 symphony was extensively revised in 1909 with a new scherzo inserted and the material of the other three movements mostly retained but recomposed, giving us here a significantly different symphony than the one recorded by Chandos in 1990 in their Parry symphony cycle. Proserpine is a late, 11-minute confection from 1912 which has something of the lightness of Delibes or Massenet while the Suite moderne (1886; rev. 1892) invites comparison with orchestral suites by Tchaikovsky and Grieg. (One movement was not recorded, perhaps because of time constraints?) Ladies of BBC National Chorus of Wales, BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Rumon Gamba.
