Description: Yes, an opera, not an operetta, by Suppé, through-composed and Italian in its dramatic character although its original libretto was in German. Premiered in 1885, the score was lost during the war in 1943 but an Italian translation was discovered along with a piano score and, in part, Suppé’s manuscript score. Of course, it’s a comic opera, its titular character being a sailor who returns home after 20 years at sea and gets involved in a plot by a mayor to have a girl for himself by gettting her lover sent to sea via a municipal obligation to provide sailors for the country’s navy. 2 CDs. Italian-English libretto. Mariukka Tepponen (soprano), Ljubomir Puškarić (baritone), Aljaž Farasin, Marco Fortunato (tenors), Giorgio Surian (bass), Rijeka Opera Choir, Rijeka Opera Symphony Orchestra; Adriano Martinolli D’Arcy.
