Description: The First (1928) was written while the composer was still a student of Myaskovsky and is a generally lyrical half-hour redolent of Russian folk music while the Second dates from 1945 and, unlike some “war works” seems more concentrated on the future than the immediate past with its ferocious energy and drive although hairpin emotional turns also occur; perhaps surprisingly, the only echoes of Shostakovich come in the finale’s ironic infusions of popular music. Rarely recorded (a mid-1990s Olympia licensing of a Soviet recording being its only other appearance on CD (?). Stenhammar Quartet.
