Description: A Frisian who spent 40 years teaching at a primary school, Volketsma was self-taught as a composer and an unashamedly Romantic one at that. Nothing in his quartets (the first is from 1925 and the second, undated, had its two last movements completed from sketches for this recording) would have troubled Brahms and the last movement of the first is positively Mozartian. Only the 1943 In Memoriam, to three British pilots who crashed nearby, has anything from the 20th century - striking harmonies reminiscent of Britten, a composer Folkertsma could hardly have known at the time. Vondel Quartet, Johan Bijhold (piano).
