Description: Sterndale Bennett’s sonata has a Mendelssohnian delicacy and lightness of touch and a disarming simplicity (and much exuberant piano-writing) - you’d think it was an early work of his 20s but it dates from 1852, signposting his soon-to-come consignment to the “old-fashioned” shelf of musical society. But it’s very attractive and, with Fanny’s two rarely heard pieces, makes up 37 minutes of an 82-minute disc. Alice Neary (cello), Benjamin Frith (piano).
