ANTON RUBINSTEIN (1829-1894): Music for Piano Four Hands, Vol. 1 - Sonata, Op. 89, 3 Characteristic Pieces, (original Op. 9), 6 Characteristic Pictures, Op. 50.
Catalogue Number: 11Q037
Label: Brilliant Classics
Description: The 1871 sonata is a vast work, impetuous and brimming with brilliant and challenging writing and impetuously performed here, its 35-minute length knocking eight minutes off the Centaur version we offered 15 years ago (12B051) but the rarities are the early Pieces from 1847 which show the young Rubinstein trafficking in typical Romantic material (he later removed its original opus number to suppress it), and the more mature set of Pictures (1854-58) where he begins to synthesize the influences of Liszt and Chopin into a personal style.
