JOHANN BAPTIST VANHAL (1739-1813): String Quartets in C Minor, Op. 1/4, in G, in A, Op. 33/2 and in E Flat.
Catalogue Number: 11Q027

Description: Our second chance in recent years to understand why his contemporaries placed Vanhal's quartets on a plane with Mozart's and Haydn's. Given how many he wrote, you'd think it would have been easier not to duplicate one from the only previous recording (11O028), but no matter since we get the alpha and omega here: the Op. 1 quartets date from 1769 (before Haydn's first real quartets) but already use sonata-form, and the E Flat is part of Vanhal's last group of six quartets which date from 1786 and 1787. Lotus String Quartet.
