Description: Two first recordings on this latest Koechlin release which is anchored by the nostalgic, evocative, bittersweet L'Ancienne Maison, the composer's half-hour long,1923-23 cycle which recalls a halcyon summer spent in Switzerland as a 15-year-old, and the 20-minute set of Esquisses (1905-15) in which the serene style of Fauré meets the harmony and counterpoint of Bach's Inventions. In the pieces recorded here you'll also hear Gershwin, Satie, Ravel, Scriabin and others but the striking thing is how, just as you think you know, because of these echoes, where the piece is going to go, Koechlin takes off somewhere entirely unexpected and entirely original: off to, as the disc's title has it, "distant horizons". Michael Korstick (piano).
