Description: A whole disc of what you'd get if Dvorák had been born in the 20th century and was Welsh! Well, not quite: Hoddinott's eight Welsh Dances and three Investiture Dances (for Prince Charles' 1969 investiture as Prince of Wales) are in the style of Welsh folk music and don't use actual folk tunes (Mathias', which appeared a few months ago in these pages coupling a Vaughan Williams London Symphony), cast their net wider with "in the style of " including Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall and Brittany). Not in the style of Welsh anything are his five-minute Jack Straw overture, in the rip-roaring form of similar pieces by Malcolm Arnold, and the 13-minute Concerto Grosso of 1966, a virtuoso work-out for the National Youth Orchestra of Wales. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra; Charles Groves, BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra; Bryden Thomson, National Youth Orchestra of Wales; Arthur Davison.
