GIORGIO CAMBISSA (1921-1998): Concertos for Orchestra Nos. 1, 2 and 4, 5 pezzi for Orchestra.
Catalogue Number: 10W011
Label: Da Vinci Classics
Description: Born in Trieste, Cambissa was known primarily as a conductor (he studied under Karajan and Celibidache) but he also was director of the Busoni Piano Competition of Bolzano for twenty years and left behind a significant amount of compositions. He was no avant-garde modernist; there is a French sensibility and a neo-classical flavor to the orchestral works recorded here, all of which but the 1967-68 fourth concerto date from the 1950s. One of his principal teachers was Ghedini but his generally polystylistic musical language also includes Respighi, Petrassi, Poulenc and the least modernistic parts of Stravinsky. A real find and we should hope for more Cambissa to be recorded in the future. Moldova State Philharmonic Orchestra; Massimiliano Doninelli.
