Description: Like the other Strathclyde Concertos from the late 80s through mid-90s, these two represent the most accessible end of the composer's output. The double string concerto derives some material from 17th and 18th century sources, which underlies the work's harmony even as it expands into far more dissonant territory. The work is in the conventional three movements, with a haunting, or haunted, central threnody bracketed by movements of more complex texture and strenuous dialogue between the duo of soloists, themselves involved in intricate counterpoint much of the time, and the orchestra. The flute concerto is light in texture, with flutes, violins and oboes omitted from the orchestra, clearing a space in timbre and register for the solo instrument to inhabit, so to speak. Throughout the piece, the music has a mercurial quality, and a certain open innocence, with lively metrical shifts and a divertingly fanciful buoyancy of mood.
