Description: The only other recording of the 1916 trio likely used the Pascal Bentoiu edition of the densely-packed, hard-to-read manuscript score. For this recording, the Schubert Ensemble's pianist, William Howard, went back to the manuscript and, with the help of two of his colleagues, produced a slightly different version which allowed them to "bring greater conviction to our performance of it". A long e-mail from Howard about this process, very interesting to read, is included in the extremely useful and well-written notes. The late (1940) quintet is a perfect example of Enescu's density of thought and subtlety of expression as he manages to synthesize the music of French and German Romanticism and to transcend it through his own creativity to produce a deeply-felt work which rarely gives up its secrets on one hearing; this is a beautiful work, confusing at first in its density and musical profusion, but well worth getting to know (only one other recording on CD!). Remus Azoitei (violin), Schubert Ensemble.
