ALBERT LORTZING (1801-1851): Regina.
Catalogue Number: 10P030

Description: Lortzing's only serious opera, Regina was based on actual events which occurred during the 1848 revolutionary unrest in Vienna but it was never published or performed. There are elements of the rescue opera with its heroine, daughter of a factory owner, abducted by a middle-class youth who simulates revolutionary fervor to get the help of a band of striking workers. Melodrama, grand opera, revolutionary choruses, the damsel in distress, her factory manager lover and would-be rescuer... it all adds up to what would certainly a colorful stage production (this is a live recording but, if it was fully staged, there are no photos); it certainly is an interesting unicum in Lortzing's œuvre. 2 CDs. German-English libretto. Johanna Stojkovic (soprano), Theresa Holzhausen (mezzo), Daniel Kirch (tenor), Detlef Roth (baritone), Prague Philharmonic Choir, Munich Radio Orchestra; Ulf Schirmer.
