Description: Many of these gorgeous short works (only the Concerto andaluso, at around 20 minutes, is a traditional, full-length piece) express Zandonai's own personality - pensive, noble, often melancholy but with flashes of exuberance and rhythmic vitality. They are full of catchy melodies, often imaginatively orchestrated (harpsichord, triangle, castanets, basque drum and cymbals in the andaluso) and, in the short ones, you'll always find yourself wishing there were more music. You'll also find yourself wishing that the five-movement, 42-minute symphonic poem Primavera in Val di Sole was here in its original form since the piano duet version plainly can't do justice to the orchestral colors Zandonai will have lavished on it but that doesn't take away from the immense enjoyablity of this set: something for everyone, from orchestral collectors to chamber collectors to solo piano collectors. A very happy surprise! 3 CDs for the price of 2. Trento Chamber Orchestra "Ensemble Zandonai", Trio Guarino.
