VIVIAN FUNG (b.1975): Violin Concerto, Piano Concerto "Dreamscapes", Glimpses for Prepared Piano.
Catalogue Number: 10O094
Description: Fung has crafted a remarkably integrated and appealing personal voice from her Eastern heritage (Chinese-Vietnamese, with extensive studies of Indonesian music) and Western musical upbringing and education. The idiom is broadly tonal, much inflected by eastern scales. The solo parts of the concerti are largely conventionally virtuosic, with obvious ties to big-name 20th-century models. What is unusual, and most appealing, is the way the composer uses devices such as (very, in the solo pieces) prepared piano and unusual playing techniques, and unorthodox instruments (bird whistles, drums, resonating glasses) more commonly associated with the avant garde, alongside lively and persistent ostinati ad folk-like melodies to evoke the Gamelan orchestra and other atmospheric images of the East.
