Description: The quintet is effectively a fully-fledged concerto in chamber guise. An agile first movement is followed by a serene slow movement and a mischievous finale in which rhythmic energy reminding us of Linkola's non-classical early career is grafted seamlessly onto a neoclassical form. Winds is a brief tone poem in mysterious mood, which is continued and amplified in the large-scale concerto. This robust three-movement work begins in a determined mood of propulsive energy, which gives way to woodwind solos hinting at the melancholy of autumn. The middle movement, 'September' has something in common with Mahlerian nature painting and night music, while the finale begins with jazzy, syncopated energy, leading to a nocturnal blues and a resigned conclusion. Throughout, Linkola's idiom is, as always, approachable and instantly likable; comfortably tonal but with an original sound and an individual voice. Pekka Niskanen (clarinet), The Chamber Orchestra of Lapland; John StorgÄrds.
