Description: Although known primarily for his choral and organ compositions, Distler also wrote for the piano and this new collection includes mostly first recordings, as only two of the pieces were ever actually published. The Klavierstücke (1936) were part of an unfinished larger project based on Bartók's Mikrokosmos - little character pieces, quite original in style, for younger pianists. The sonata, invention and largo are student works from 1928-9 which show why his teacher, Hermann Grabner, later recalled in 1964 Distler as a "young genius suddenly pop(ping) up among a large number of students of average talent". The Spielstücke of 1938 have the benefit, as do so many other baroque and early classical works, of sounding almost like different pieces when played on the piano instead of the organ (although, plainly, Distler intended that they fit both instruments). Annette Töpel (piano).
