MINAS BORBOUDAKIS (b.1974): Zykloiden I, Palindromia, 6 Gedanken, Katharsis, 1945. Nachklänge der Vergangenheit, Metal Mechanics I-V.
Catalogue Number: 10J114
Description: These piano works teem with ideas, almost as though the composer were expressing thoughts, influences, inventions and impressions directly through the medium of the instrument. In his fast textures and scintillating patterns, indeed, there is something of the piano roll (in the Nancarrow sense), and the demands of these pieces suggest a mechanism as ideal executant. Shimmering textures, jazzy syncopations and figuration of the complexicist type, though less obsessively complicated, ostinati and athletic virtuosity are all found here in abundance. Borboudakis also explores sonority, resonance and echo effects, but as a secondary issue, not in the sense of obsessively exploring the overtones of sustained sounds. The piano works are separated by brief electronic interludes, assembled from sampled and vastly altered piano sounds. Minas Borboudakis (piano and tape).
