Description: Championed by Toscanini, Martucci was the leader of the very small band of 19th century Italian composers who specialized in orchestral and concertante music. Although clearly aware of the Germanic heritage of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms, Martucci manages to sound quite un-Germanic, especially in his second symphony and second piano concerto. Lots of melody and big gestures, with the smaller works, often orchestrated piano pieces, provide salon-style delights. 4 CDs. Francesco Caramiello (piano), George Ives (cello), James Clark (violin), Rachel Yakar (soprano), The Philharmonia; Francesco D'Avalos.
