Description: Although among the trailblazers in the new genre of the symphony, Abel was also the last great cultivator, as composer and performer, of the viola da gamba, an exotic instrument from history at the time he popularized it in England. The works here, except for the sonata, were probably meant for private performace in front of Abel's close friends and evoke the culture of sensibility, the social importance of the dance as well as containing programmatic elements. Susanne Heinrich (viola da gamba).
