ALEXANDER TANSMAN (1897-1986): Symphonies, Vol. 2 - Symphony No. 7 "Lyrique", Musique pour orchestre (Symphony No. 8), Symphony No. 9.
Catalogue Number: 10J008
Description: Purchases of the first volume of this series, offered in April of 2006 (04H004), will know what to expect here: vigorous syncopated rhythmicism, a Stravinskian use of ostinati and dramatic accentuations, polytonalism (Milhaud was a good friend) and love of counterpoint. These symphonies date from 1944, 1948 and 1957-8, the Seventh and Ninth being world premiere recordings (and the Ninth probably a world premiere performance also) and all have deeply serious, often tragic slow second movements which contrast with the busy, very neo-classical music of the other three. Although Stravinsky, Bartók and Milhaud are mentioned often in the notes, these ears also hear echoes of the pre-war Martinu here and there also. Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; Oleg Caetani.
